Description
It is known as one of the “crying insects” and it spends most of its long life of 3 to 17 years as a larva in the soil.
The food at the time of the larva is sap, but because it sucks from the root without moving much, it sucks from the conduit carrying the water, not the sieve pipe carrying nutrients.
The final-age larvae go out on the ground, climb up on tree trunks and branches, etc. and molt to become adults.
Japanese says Semi.
